The “Graph Theory for Visual Learners” Project
If you are interested in more details about the upcoming video, here’s a quick teaser: the animations from the first couple of minutes. (There’s no voiceover or music yet, they are usually added in the last phases of my workflow.)
I’m making the video in a custom animation framework I built (which I simply call The Palindraw), so the visual quality is truly next level. There are already about 15 minutes of beautiful animations, and let me tell you, they are breathtaking.
Here are the questions I want to answer in this video with the help of graph theory:
How to optimally navigate in a city?
How to assemble the human genome by finding Hamiltonian paths in a graph?
How to plan an attack on the utility infrastructure, and how to prepare against it?
How can mathematical expressions be represented as graphs, and why should we care?
For instance, I built a graph from the streets and intersections of my hometown, and computed the (length-weighted) centrality of each edge. Red edges are highly central, blue ones are not so much.
Without any traffic data, this map perfectly shows which streets are most painful to navigate during rush hour.
I love graph theory.
